Third Class Accommodations

Compared to saloon and second cabin, third-class accommodation was plain.  Compared to other ships of her time, however, Lusitania‘s third class accommodations were comfortable and spacious.  Aboard Lusitania, third class passengers even had sheltered deck access with seating in a roofed and partially enclosed space between the ladies’ room and smoking room on Shelter Deck ‘C’.

Ladies’ Room

A ladies’ lounge on Shelter Deck ‘C’ was on the starboard side of the ship close to the bow directly across of the men’s smoking room and immediately above the dining room.  The room was furnished with polished pine.

Smoking Room

The men’s smoking room was on Shelter Deck ‘C’ on the port side close to the bow, directly across the ship from the ladies’ lounge and immediately above the dining room.  The room was furnished with polished pine.

Staterooms

Cabins were shared with different cabins accommodating 2, 4 or 6 bunks and a wash basin.  Such accommodation surpassed the typical dormitories and open berths of other ships of her time.

Dining Saloon

The dining room was on Saloon Deck ‘D’ near the bow of the ship.  The room measured 79 feet x 60 feet (24 m × 18 m).  The room was furnished with polished pine.  A piano was provided for passenger use.  As in second cabin, meals were taken at long tables and in two sittings.

  1. What was the cost of a third class ticket? I know the second class fare was lowered to $50. I’m wondering what the cost of an upgrade would have been. Also, I’ve read in a couple of books that Julia Sullivan swam in the pool. Lusitania didn’t have a pool, did it?

  2. what was the date of the journey from England before the return from America of the fatality and is there a passenger list for out going to America ?my grandparents sailed to America on the Lusitania 1915 3rd class
