William Martin-Davey was the son of the surveyor and secretary to Lloyd’s Register of Shipping. William had been involved in the shipping world since 1879.  He held first class engineer’s certificate and also was at one time a surveyor for Lloyd’s Register of Shipping.  He was highly regarded in his community as a local Conservative party leader.  He was also senior partner in Martin-Davey and Beard, consulting engineers and naval architects of Liverpool.

William, his wife Elizabeth and son Arthur left England on 30 August 1914 on the Victorian for Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.  There, William planned to further business in the mercantile marine business.  The family had been returning to England on the Lusitania where William was going on a semi business visit.  The entire family perished in the disaster.
