Rescue Vessels

Unlike Titanic, where only Carpathia arrived to take on survivors, a number of vessels came to the aid of Lusitania‘s survivors. A number of Lusitania survivors were also transferred from one vessel to another. Furthermore, some survivors did not recall which vessel rescued them and some survivors remained unconscious until awakening in Ireland. As such, it may be difficult to determine which survivors were on which vessel.

  1. Hi I was wondering if there was any information regarding any of the people who tried to rescue those who were on the Lusitania, apparently my gran’s grandfather was in the merchant navy and drowned trying to rescue folk, his surname was Maloney, wondering if there might be any record somewhere?

    • I am interested in the same info. I was researching my family history and when interviewing my relatives I found heard my merchant marine great grandfather (last name Barnes) was involved in the rescue.

  2. It was rumoured that my Great Aunt Lilian was on this ship. Her family of 5 children and Husband were also killed on this vessel.
All i know is her first name Lillian her husband was a Carpenter, the girls of her family were profoundly deaf. They had emigrated to Canada to start a fresh, it did not work out so they were coming back to England when it was sunk. I heard that Lillian and 1 child may have survived but i am coming up blank can anyone help at all?.

  3. Hi,
My grandad Harry Costain was a crewman aboard the Peel fishing vessel WandererPL 12 that was fishing for mackerel off Kinsale,he was 17 and the youngest of a crew of 6.They watched the Lusitania come around the head of Kinsale and being torpedoed.
They were the first vessel on the scene and took 136 out of the water and took another lifeboat in tow with around 80 people in it.My grandad never spoke about it as you could imagine the carnage was dreadfull.
Some years later he and the crew were awarded medals for there rescue and we have placed his in a small museum called the Leece Museum which is in his home port of Peel a small fishing town in the Isle of Man British Isles.

  5. Hi all it would have been my Great Auntie Lillian on the ship with her husband and children that died. I have not been able to confirm this though. All of the girls were deaf 5 in total. Her husand was a carpenter and they had gone to try and make a better life for them all but I did not work out. They were all coming home when the ship was attacked. De
