Mr. Walter McLean

Walter McLean, 38, was a British citizen who lived in France. He had previously come to North America aboard Lusitania on 9 October 1914. Also aboard Lusitania on that trip were Friedrich Schwarte, Thomas Slidell, Leo Schwabacher, and Henry Sonneborn.

McLean’s ticket for the last voyage of the Lusitania was 46149 and he stayed in cabin D-59. McLean was lost in the Lusitania sinking.

McLean was at lunch with Josephine Burnside, her daughter IrisFrederick McMurtry, and George Powell when the torpedo struck Lusitania. Josephine was the only person at their table who survived.

  1. In a letter from Thomas Somerset, (dated 12/5/15 Belfast) to Mr A. McPherson; Walter McLean was credited with saving Mrs Burnside’s life and perishing himself. According to witnesses life jackets were not worn by many people.
